Project scope

What is the main goal for this project?

Racialized and low-income communities in North Edmonton face disproportionate exposure to environmental health risks due to proximity to industrial sites, traffic corridors, and lack of green infrastructure. These communities often have limited access to information about how environmental factors impact their health, and few culturally appropriate resources to support advocacy or prevention.

Students will address this gap by researching local environmental health challenges, applying a lens of environmental racism and social justice, and creating accessible, community-facing outreach tools. By the end of the project, students are expected to produce materials that help raise awareness, promote individual and collective action, and support the partner organization’s broader advocacy and education goals.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Students will conduct an environmental scan focused on environmental health disparities in our target neighborhoods. They will co-develop a set of outreach tools, such as a resource guide, poster or infographic, and a draft workshop outline. Deliverables will be community-facing and support our larger goal of public education and environmental justice advocacy.

Expected Outcomes and Deliverables

Tasks and Activities Learners Will Engage In:

  • Conduct an environmental scan of the target neighbourhoods to identify key environmental health risks (e.g., air or water quality concerns, proximity to industrial zones, lack of green space).
  • Review relevant literature and community reports on environmental racism and social determinants of health in Alberta and Canada.
  • Consult with the community organization to understand the lived experiences and priorities of affected residents.
  • Design culturally inclusive, accessible outreach materials such as:
  • A community resource guide (e.g., where to access clean water, free air purifiers, or public health services)
  • An infographic or visual aid highlighting key issues and protective actions
  • A draft workshop or community presentation plan that could be delivered in the future
  • Summarize findings and recommendations in a final written report and prepare a 10-minute presentation for the organization.

Deliverables:

  • Environmental scan summary (approx. 3–4 pages)
  • Outreach materials (e.g., infographic, one-pager, or resource guide in PDF format)
  • Draft workshop plan or educational session outline (1–2 pages)
  • Final report that synthesizes research, rationale, and design decisions (approx. 6–8 pages)
  • Slide deck and presentation for the community partner (10 minutes, with Q&A)
